Hang around long enough, and questions get solved.  Like, “where does milk come from?” and “why can’t I drink gin, dad??!!”  I had those two down by the time I was 5 and 16.  Actually, the latter took me a few more “lessons” before I truly understood it, but…I get it now.

For now though, I’m speaking specifically about the review I wrote a few years ago on Swiss Petite Fruits.  In it, I touch on the fact that a sour version of the candies was released, but very hard to find:

“…they’ve created a sour version of these candies. I don’t know if they’re called Sour Swiss Petite Fruit or something else, but they are INSANELY good. Take everything great about the original candy, and just throw a general level of sour-more like a very tarts flavor, not too sour-over them. Delish. SCARILY delish.    … They exist, but as far as I can tell (and please, SOMEONE prove me wrong and email us the link to them) they only are sold at the Sweet Factory now.”

I think that was the case, but no longer.  Now, it’s on.com.

For those that aren’t familiar with the original “Swiss Petite Fruits”, here’s what I’ll say about them. They’re a combination of a chewy, slightly hard, slightly tart, fruity, extremely tasty candy. My first candy love ever, if you want history. I’d compare them to something else, but I’ve thought about this a lot-there isn’t any other candy like them. I was so obsessed with these in the late 90’s that I’d buy a couple pounds (which was very hard to do back then, very hard to find), pour them in a candy jar-bedside, and turn on Seinfeld. Yada yada yada, they’d be gone. It was dangerous.

But somewhere along the way I found a bag of the sour version. The fruits look exactly the same as the originals, save for these differences:

-no strawberries
-the bananas are green and speckled.

I’m not going to ramble on about these, but I need to express this to you: these sour mini fruits are in my top 5 candies of all time. That’s no small feat for a Candyguru, mind you. I heart these. I love these. I can eat these 24/7, fresh, stale whatever. The sour aspect is not at all overwhelming. Not Sour Starburst sour, not Warheads sour, not even generic grocery store “sour worms” sour. It’s more an overall tart coating, that never overwhelms the fresh fruit flavor these things excel in bringing to the table.

Thinking about it now, I think part of my fascination of these things is their look. I mean, …look at them. Gorgeous, right? The presentation appeals to my long gone youthful sense of color and wonder, they just somehow seem new and interesting every time I see them. These look DAMN fine in a candy jar, I’ll tell you that much for sure.

Having said all of this, I’m not saying these are for everyone. In fact…of all the people I’ve given these to, I’m not sure even one of them have “loved” them. They all like ’em, but I think I might have an unhealthy fascination for them, and I’m fine with that. There’s something so comforting about these, so reliable, and so nostalgic, I’m sure I’ll always try to keep a few LBs of them within arms reach.  Now I know where to get them.  And so do you.

Buy these lovelies for a good price here, in pound increments.  Don’t judge-one pound isn’t even close to enough.
