we were approached by Kabang about reviewing their hard candies. Hard candy with an energy boost!  I’m always a bit wary about these kinds of things, as I’m not down with feeding kids caffeine or tribal roots pulled from Brazilian tree frogs’ skin. Just too much unknown there for me. Therefore, I was relieved to read the ingredients- just a lot of vitamins and ginseng.

Ok then! Let’s do this.

The box looks like it belongs in a Las Vegas’ hotel Ultralounge-very swank. I noticed four flavors written on top: cherry, apple, watermelon & grape. The classics. IMG_4235

Here’s where things started to get fun for me. I opened up the watermelon.

First, let’s talk about the flavor-it’s absolutely outstanding.  Delicious, juicy, flavorful…truly amazing,  but it reminded me of something-something specific: Zotz candy.  To me, the flavor was exactly the same.  I also noticed that Kabang is made in Italy- same as Zotz.  Hmmm.  Time to get my CSI hat on…

Yes, I happened to have some Zotz because I always have some Zotz. They’re top 5 all time for me. But keeping the wrapper on isn’t gonna get this done.

IMG_4238A few things are clear. Kabang is bigger than Zotz. Also, my Zotz looks severely sad and shriveled. But I ate both back to back, and I’m telling you, they’re the same.

It’s at this point that I reached out to the fine people at Kabang and asked what’s up. The answer, as it usually is, was the most obvious: yes, these are made at the Zotz factory. In fact, the only thing different about them is that Kabang are 25% larger, and they also have the vitamins and ginseng thrown in.

For me, this is a win-win. One of my favorite candies of all time just got healthier?  And they’re kid safe?  Great.  As to the energy claims-look, I don’t get an energy burst after a double cappuccino. So I can’t say whether it’s effective or not with these. But the bottom line is that it doesn’t matter-they’re delicious. And if you get bump out of it?  All the better.

According to the manufacturers, Kabang are sold in a lot of retail outlets, which means they’re definitely easier to find than Zotz.  If you see them, you should definitely give them a try. The flavors are more on point than almost any other hard candy out there.  And the fizzy tart powder inside, laced with vitamins and ginseng, is done better than almost all other fizzy-inside candies.

I really love these, I hope you do too.

I am always skeptical of energy products but was pleasantly surprised by this candy. I got a nice little lift from just 1 candy. The grape flavor was tasty and the fizzy center was an unusual surprise!

I tried this and it works. Not sure how such a small non-caffeine non-drug item can do this, but it did give me a decent jolt.

Maybe, “Kabang” name doesn’t seem a nice name for candy… 🙂
