Fla•Ver Artisan Candies

Can natural candies that are interesting even be MADE any more?

There’s a new candy in town, and it needs your help.  It’s called called FlaVer-little round candies, naturally colored and flavored.  Here’s what they look like:

Each small packet of candies holds a ton of the small round treats.  The flavors are pretty well rounded and interesting: mint, cherry, lime & chipotle, peppermint, pineapple & jalapeño, and popcorn.  All over the place, right?  Here’s something cool to checkout: On the back of the packs, you’ll notice a small window where you can see the candies.  Note that they’re almost all off white.  Only the cherry and lime & chipotle have traces of color because…well, their naturally sourced flavors have color in them.

Can’t see?  Cherry:

On to the tasting.  Keeping in mind that they all generally look like this:

or in the case of cherry, like this,

…it makes it kinda fun to have a blind tasting, which is what I did with the Mrs. and Jonny Guru Jr.

Cherry: It’s fine.  It tastes like cherries.  I happen to put cherry very low on  my personal flavor scale, but that doesn’t mean that this one isn’t good.

Mint: This one was really good.  A bit reminiscent of a hard mint, the flavor explodes once you bite down on it.  It says “essence of rosemary creme” on the pack, but I didn’t really get that addition.   Mrs. Guru was especially into these.

Lime & Chipotle: First, mad props to FlaVer for making this combination, it’s ballsy.  Jonny Guru Jr. really liked these.  The Mrs. didn’t, but what the hell does she know?  She’s not officially a Guru.  However…I didn’t` really care for this flavor either.  It’s not due to the heat, that I really dig.  It’s just that a chipotle is a smoked jalapeño, and I don’t like the addition of smoke flavor in candy.  For me it rarely works, and this time was no exception.  It should be noted that the bag I brought to work was consumed very quickly, so this one could go either way.

Peppermint: You gotta be hardcore to go in for peppermint anything.  And these don’t disappoint-they’re intense.  Similar to the mint, but they deliver that crisp, clear peppermint flavor absolutely correctly. I don’t usually like peppermint more than spearmint, but I did in this case.

Pineapple & jalapeno: Hellllll yes.  These are amazing.  Obvious authentic pineapple flavor is the first note, then comes the heat, and it’s significant.  Not in any painful way (the Jr. liked this one too), but it’s spicy.  So good.

Popcorn: This one struck out in a major way with the Mrs. and Jonny Guru Jr.  The funny thing is, it’s the first one I tried and I really liked it-I just didn’t think it tasted like popcorn.  For me, it’s more of a buttered rum LifeSaver vibe, which s a good thing.  I don’t like Jelly Belly’s popcorn bean, so I didn’t expect to like this, but I did-just not for the reported flavor.

Bottom line is that these are good-not just to me, but to a Mom who’s beyond concerned about putting artificial crap in here son’s body (me, she’s not so concerned about), and to a 10 year old who could give a shit about whether a particular candy is sourced with natural flavoring & colors.  This is  great sign, because it means the flavor, or FlaVer, of the candy is speaking for itself.  See what I did there?  It’s called bringing things full circle.

Before I go, I want to mention that they’ve launched a kickstarter for these candies, link at the bottom of this review.  If you pledge $40 or more, not only do you get a pound of the flavor of your choice, but you get a gorgeous dispenser that THIS GUY WANTS. (<—Shameless attempt at getting free crap)

Flavor candy are doing good things: making candy, which is the noblest of pursuits, but doing it with class, making interesting flavors & using natural ingredients.  Check them out, help them out, and enjoy.
