This is a weird one for me. First, let’s start with the bizarre:

The name? “Chewsbetter”

The slogan? “The candy healthy people’s chew!”. No, I didn’t write that incorrectly. Read it again.

What they’re saying is that they belong to the group known as the “candy healthy people”. Absurd, right?
That’s why they get an A+ for the slogan. Awesome. Anything that makes me laugh and/or think gets some street cred.

Opening them up, here’s what they BOTH look like, which points towards their commitment to being all-natural. There’s no fake coloring up in this piece:

There’s two flavors: Strawberry Lemonade, and Pomegranate Blueberry Acai. That’s a hell of a lot of anit-oxidants on that last one, people. Anyhow, I tasted both recently, and that’s what brings me back to saying: This is a totally weird one for me.

The flavors are natural, like I said, and you know how I feel about that.

Or do you?

It’s good. I like it. I like tasting real things. The chew on the candy is a bit soft for me, but solid. Good, rounded flavors, not too complex, but also not your garden variety tastes. The weird part is that…

…I just don’t think of these as candy.

Don’t get wrong- I like them. In fact, in certain scenarios, I mos def can see buying them. But they just don’t have that “candy” gratifying taste and feel for some reason. What they do have is a very real energy food possibility for me. I could easily see downing the 100 calorie pack of these as a breakfast substitute, especially seeing as how each pack is loaded with vitamins and fiber. They’d be perfect for that.

The problem is that I just don’t see me sitting on the couch, popping these in my cake hole as I watch me a little Jeff Probst on Survivor. They’re just too….real for that. Too obviously an energy/vitamin source. I’ve had other natural candies that don’t have this issue, but these do. There’s a graininess to them that really harkens me back to my childhood, with my mom trying to convince me that carob was “just as good as chocolate!”.

When all’s said & done, I like these. I just don’t like these as candy. But if there’s any way I can become one of the “candy healthy people”, I think I’d like to do that, if for nothing else than the business card opportunity.

***Please tell me that SOMEONE got the title reference to the song by The Who? Anyone? Sigh…

I finished my first batch of these and they were strangely delightful. Their texture is what I assume those Aids chocolate candies in the 80’s felt like in your mouth – before AIDS obliterated that brand. Not sure I like them, but I kept eating them and wanted more. Total Acai berry email spam for your mouth.

Of course I got the reference.
