Cadbury Flake Bar

One of the most old school Brit chocolate bars is put on notice today. Notice of what, you say? Just general notice.

Of all the candy bars you see from Europe, none might be as common as the Flake Bar. Then again, that could simply be my impression. But I see them a lot, and now we’re reviewing it.  That’s kinda how this whole thing works.

Before we go on-one thing I’ll say about this bar is that it’s unique. Let’s face it, most chocolate based candy bars are simply retreaded combinations of chocolate, caramel, nougat, perhaps some nuts…and maybe some crunchy cereal. And that’s fantastic, don’t get me wrong. But the Flake bar is different. Like most innovation, it came from a happy accident.

Back in the day, a Cadbury factory worker was probably shirking responsibility on the plant floor, hiding. Scared,

only, isolated, contemplating suicide, or worse, continuing to live in his current doldrums life. The walls were closing in. While doing this, they noticed that the excess chocolate that streamed off one of their machines went into mold below, creating “folded” thin layers of chocolate, one on top of the next. Said worker told their boss, and a new candy bar was created. Also, said worker was celebrated instead of fired for being lazy. Another happy accident. Thin layers of chocolate folded over each other. This isn’t to be mistaken for aerated chocolate bars like Nestle’s Aero or the Wispa bar-it’s not the same thing. The inside of those bars has tons if circular air holes. The inside of this bar, or cross section, looks more like this:

My bar got pretty beat up in transit, but you can still tell what’s going on with it:

Now we know what it is and how it was created. But how does it taste? Well, …it’s good. It tastes like milk chocolate. Yes, there’s a textural interest in the layer thing, but it’s just not enough for me to get excited about. But people go NUTS over these things-why?

If you’re a Flake Freak, please comment and tell us what you love about them. Is it the texture? I’m thinking it must be, because there’s lots of ways to get Cadbury chocolate, most of which I enjoy more than this bar. I like the bar, I just don’t think I’d ever seek it out.

Feel free to buy some from the link below and then to publicly shame me about how I’m wrong about everything.

What’s the difference between this one and the Twirl bar?

The twirl bar is actually two flake bars with a thin chocolate coating. 🙂

I love them. It’s the think chocolate feel but it’s still generally light. The texture is totally unique. And the fact they they saved a worker’s life. Also, they’re sold in every vanilla soft serve from every corner from ice cream trucks. TDF
