Trolli Impresses Yet Again – But What’s The Flavor?!?!

Imagine a flavor you're intimately familiar with, but that you've never eaten before-as a candy, that is.

Know what I do during the holidays? I eat. And I vape.  Most importantly though, I run around from place to place, seeing friends, family, doing some forced activities, some fun ones, and then? It’s January 3rd.  Back to the salt mine.

So this time, before the insanity really begins, I want to take a little time to write my last candy review of 2010. It’s been a great year: you guys have spread the word about us, a TV channel approached us about developing a show, and we haven’t been sued. All in all, a “win-win”. Sure, the show might have fallen through this time, but c’mon-do you really think you can hold down this kind of charm?:

Err-scratch that.  Reverse it.

Regardless though, it’s been a good year for candy, and a great year for the Candygurus.  We only have you guys to thank for that.  So…it’s only fitting that you get a present from us.

What’s that you say?  Are we sending you something?  (Sound of hearty, Santa-like guttural laughter).  Ahh, you kids are sweet.  Don’t ever change.

Of course we’re not sending you anything–but we will toss you a pointer, and this one’s a goody.

I’ve been bemoaning (love that word, and love doing it) the lameness of the varieties of Trolli gummies one can find in America for years.  And nothing’s changed on that front- you can get 5 or 6 things, and they’re all crap.  The highlight is their “sour brite crawlers” you can get a gas stations, then puke out when you get home.

Overseas though…it’s a different story.  I’ve now tasted at least 6 Trolli varieties direct from Germany (again, thank Saint Susie!) and most of them are excellent.

Before we discuss the name, understand that when I get a box of treats from Susie, it’s better than Christmas.  Mostly cause I’m a Jew, so Christmas is no big whoop to me, but it kicks butt on Hanukkah too.  I don’t take my time reading packages, I tear through the bags and barely take a moment to decide what to try first.  When I opened these, I didn’t even look at the picture on the label.  Then I threw one in my mouth.

This was a different taste.  A firm, Euro-style gummy, but the flavor…that was something new.  It started out a bit sweet, but…then it opened up into this insane flavor.  This taste that I KNEW I had tried before, but I just couldn’t place it.  Suddenly a tart edge came out of it, with a nice faint alcoholic perfume-and I mean that in the best way.  It was confounding- I couldn’t for the life of me figure out the flavor, but I was very familiar with it.  And very impressed with these candies.  So I looked at the container:

Grape.  Grape, dammit!  But not grape candy flavor- actual grapes.  And that’s why I was confused-no one makes grape candy that actually tastes like the fruit.  Instead, grape candy (which I love, don’t get me wrong) has turned into it’s own flavor.  Candy grape, they should call it.

These Prosecco Pops though…these nailed the flavor spectrum of grapes.  Unlike must gummies, their flavor profile had an evolution from sweet to tart, back to sweet with a slight wine tinge.  Truly amazing.

Matty and I started this site not only to share our love of hard to find candy, but also to help you guys find out where to get it.  And that part is still evolving for us-the world, despite getting smaller every day, still is damn huge when it comes to candy procurement.  Soon, things will change.  And we’ll be there.  Or here.  Whatever, you get the point, we’re gonna get the friggin’ candy to you.  But for now, this link is all I can offer, and the site is in German, and I don’t even know if they ship to the US.

It’ll have to do for now.  So be patient, be good, be generous, and may you all have a happy and healthy 2011.  The Candygurus love you.

You gotta love you guys and I do! But, you still need to test out candy combos that kill. Like a Fig Newman with a Chimps Mints(chocolate mint) on top for a wonderful sweet thing! And a Wonderful Sweet Ano Nuevo to all you CandyGurus and fans!

As for the link you posted – World of Sweets do actually sell to the US, unfortunately the shipping cost is WAY over the top: USD 52 for under 10 kilos.. I will check if I can find an alternative supplier for all you Americans out there.
    Happy Christmas, Hanukkah, whatever —
